Lake Huron Spawning Smallmouth, May 20 to 22

The Michigan Fly Fishing Club does a big outing at the tip of the Thumb, usually the weekend before Memorial Day Weekend.  Its a good time to go but expect a lot of guys on the water that weekend.  We fish spots from Quanicassee to Huron City. I fished the river mouth pond of a small natural flowing stream.  The water was deep and still with visibility of maybe 4 feet.  Lead eyed Clouser Minnows in Brown, White and Chartreuse or other Chartreuse combinations are always good to get deep 6 or 7 feet down and get lots of fish here. ...

Chartreuse Beads Hot on the Huron, April 8

Huron Steelhead hitting chartreuse beads and a very bright Opaque Chartreuse UV bead was hot.  I lost a huge silver hen after I pressured her in close, she ripped of a run ending in a high thrashing leap breaking off.  My drag was set too tight after I screwed it down to pressure in a stubborn male that took a Mopworm Jig after the first few drifts of the day.   During the long slump when I was pounding the run with the Mopworm Jig, then with jigs ahead of various trailing beads (that were not chartreuse).  I got this Quill Back sucker.  He...

Lots of Steelhead in Big Manistee River

March 25, I landed only 2 out of a total of 6 fish I was pretty sure were fair hooked.  A couple of others seemed they were likely foul hooked. Plagued by Leader Line and Operator issues.  Only saw one fish that I lost, that was a sleek big bight hen who fought stubbornly, then ripped off a run with a slashing leap at the end.  She hit a #6 Golden Nugget Bubble Egg fish as a trailer 3 feet behind a bead.  All the other hits were on Jigs: #8 1/64 ounce Black Stonefly Jig, #6 1/32 ounce Brown Rubber...

22) Lower AuSable Bass Oct 23

On the end of the pier several guys were casting spoons, plugs, jigs or fishing minnows.  They caught or hooked a couple of smallmouth, one guy caught a very long Sheephead that was in extremely bad health due to age, disease or maybe having been gut hooked some time ago.  I caught an stout 18 inch bass and lost a smaller one.  4 to 6 foot swells were rolling in and bouncing back and forth between the two pier heads making for a very action packed bobber presentation.  The fish came to a #6 White Mopworm Jig set to 11 feet...
