A Day on the Water
Kayak Fly Fishing, Bass & Big Pike on Poppers, June 23, 2023
I hoped to get one of the big Bowfin I had seen 6 days ago in some patchy cat tail cover. My 4/0 Bullet Dog Diver was getting hit by pike so I went with a less labor intensive 2/0 White Popping Wedge. No Bowfin but got this big Pike took it cast across a big pocket surrounded by cat tails. He hit while I was busy repositioning the kayak and letting the popper rest at the end of the retrieve. The 40 pound fluorocarbon bite leader held. On the long paddle in the lee of the long dyke, I...
June 17 & 18 Point Mouillee SGA Family Canoe Trip and Some Bass, Pike & Bowfin
Sunday I took the family out in the Canoe and circumnavigating the whole perimeter of the large pond at Point Mouilliee SGA . There were no boats on the water, we saw fish, mink, 100s of Pelicans, an Eagle, Osprey, Trumpeter Swans and various Heron, Tern and Duck species. Drifting along the far rip rap dyke, I made a few cast with a 4/0 Chartreuse Bullet Dog floating diver. It got hit more often than not by small bass and one nice 17 incher. Yesterday, Saturday evening after work, there were lots of fishermen on the water ahead of me. ...
Jiggys & Topwater for St Clair River White Bass and Atlantics
The Public Boat Launch at Deckers Landing is critical access to the Saint Clair River Delta on the North Channel of the Saint Clair River. Here it spreads out and gets shallower at its mouth going into Lake Saint Clair. Some times, Big Smallmouth are out in the current. Usually Large Mouth Bass and Pike are on the edges in pockets of still water. Musky fishermen have some good days here. A kayak is a great way to get to these fish when and where wind and power boat traffic allow. When you can find these fish in water relatively clear water,...
Kayak fishing for Bass with Top Water Poppers, Divers 6/9/23
On June 9th the wind on Lake Saint Clair was forecast to be mild and from the North. The Clinton River Cutoff and Boat launch Bay would be protected. I found Large Mouth Bass mostly around 14 inches. I got 3, one was 17 inches on 3/0 White Marabou Bangers, 2 bass on a 4/0 Chartreuse Banger. I thought that the several missed hits on the white VS good hooking ratios on the big Chartereuse 4/0 Musky Banger would mean a small Chartreuse Marabou Banger would be good but I got no hits on that. On a flashy 4/0...
Kayak Fly Fishing For Top Water Bass & Pike
Another Kayak Trip to Point Mouillie State Game Marsh for bass and Pike. The wind was forecast to be low and from a good direction (NE) to try the Lake Erie side of the dyke along the rip rap. I arrived late and the wind was now blowing across Lake Erie so I went inside the dyke. I was struggling to get hits on Poppers. Switching to prototype Black Marabou Banger got one 14 inch bass that I realized had been guarding a very big school of 1/2 inch fry so he was defending his babies. Trying a Chartreuse Green...
