A Day on the Water

Saturday evening I drifted beads and jigs through a good run downstream of spawning gravel.  Green Goby Jigs, 1/32 oz #4 on the tube jig hook.  The head is  dubbed onto the Tube Jig head behind the hook eye. I landed 4 Hens but lost many more, Saturday they were hitting  Dark Brown Rubber Leg Jigs in the style that many guys tie for Tippy Dam.  This one uses dark Racoon Tail instead of Marabou. Thursday I was 2 for 4, slow bite with no pattern until I hooked 3 fish on 10mm Chartreuse beads in fast deep water.  I got 3 smallmouth on jigs. The DNR stocks big hatchery trout on April 1st in the upper Huron River below the Moss Lake Dam.  It is catch and release fly fishing until the last Saturday in April.  Then its open to keep trout on any tackle. I paddled down from the Proud Lake public access to the Huron River channel just above the Moss Lake Dam.  About every cast was taken by a bluegill with other species mixed in.  I got five stocked trout there on an Ice Marabou Minnow Jig.  Fly pictures and recipes below.   These were the first two trout.    Fishermen were...

I fished less productive spots to stay out of the wind, I used a 1/0 White & Chartreuse Great Lakes Jiggy to get 4 small Pike 16 to 20 inches and a 16 inch bass.
