Friday morning August 2nd. the Clinton River Cut Off was flowing muddy and briskly through its normally wide, deep and still channel. I put in at the Crocker boat-kayak launch.
I found some cleared water and as usual, found a few small largemouth willing to eat the 5/0 Chartreuse Dive Banger. A bigger one hit on the other side of a grass bed and I couldn't pull him over or through it and he rubbed off the barbless hook on a clump of weeds.
Last weeks Musky, today's was a little smaller.
I was casting along a bit of more "natural" shoreline sandwiched between the many rip rap and steel sea walls. I was looking elsewhere when I heard the musky blow up the popper, quickly turned to see him horizontal 3 feet above the water at the top of a leap turning back down. A small Musky a little less than 30 inches. I waited until he hit the water then tightened up on him, wish I could say I set the hook really hard. Pretty quickly I had him under the nose of the kayak then the hook pulled free.
Rained hard for hours and as I worked my way back toward the Cutoff mouth, big logs and trees were streaming quickly by in the muddy water running straight out into the Lake Saint Clair. Finish having landed 3 typical bass on the 5/0 Dive Banger and 1 bass on a 3/0, both were Chartreuse on 50lb and 40lb Bite leader respectively.
