Clinton R. Cutoff Bass, No Musky, June 2, 2022

I was hoping to see a musky,  Instead wound up mainly fishing for bass.  I got 14 that were at least 11 or 12 inches long on three colors of Banger Poppers.  This Heron had a good spot, a few minnows as well as Gar Pike and Bass hanging out here.

Fishermen using the shore access I put in at said "Channel Cats been biting all morning, and they got a big one as I paddled by.  I got some bass tight to the first rip rap sea wall.  Out around the point where the heron was fishing, the muddy water from the Clinton River Cutoff gave way to slightly clearer water and there were more bass near the rip rap, not necessarily so close.  A Chartreuse Marabou Banger was getting hit.

When I got to the water where I hoped to find a musky, I switched to the heavy tackle and 6 inch 4/0 Bangers in Chartreuse and white.  The only got the most tentative swirls from mostly not interested bass.  I put on a 5/0 Black Pearl Banger which got hit hard by bass in the same water I had fished through with the 4/0 Bangers.

The Heavy tackle wasn't balanced right.  The next rip rap shore was mostly bass free.  I did see two bass boat guys hook and land a very big fish after a long fight.  I got a glimpse of it from over 100yards away and decided it was a big catfish.  I tried some weed bed edges and got two more bass on a 3/0 White Marabou Banger.   The clouds were gone, the wind shifted to straight off the open lake.  Time to go home.
