11) Popper Pattern for Detroit River Smallmouth, July 17

Bass Fishing Bass Poppers Big Smallmouth Bob's Banger Popper Kayak Bass

Wyandot is close to my work and I put in there to paddle out to Grassy Island.  I was originally drawn to this spot because I thought this was the Grassy Island that was a famous Musky spot, it is not that Grassy Island but I did find decent fishing for largemouth that are larger than usual in the Detroit-Saint Clair system.  I also ran into some very large and aggressive gar once.

I fished 3/4 of the way around the Island and some of the vast weedy flat on the Michigan side.  Nothing except at the upstream head of the island I got one look-refusal from a bass close to the kayak.  On the next cast, another bass splashed through the popper without taking it down.  I did not set the hook, then my popper was gone and there was a second bigger fish descending next to the first one.  Rule number one for fishing floating lures, If for no good reason, it ain't on the surface, then set the hook.  Which fish did I have?  Pretty quickly it was clearly the big one.  After a very hard fight I got this nice Smallmouth on a 3/0 White Marabou Banger.
